Frequently Asked Questions
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is healing modality and is an important part of Chinese Medicine. It has practiced for at least 3,000 years and is one of the most common medical practices in the world. Needles are placed at specific points of the body to correct and balance the Yin and Yang aspects of the body and the meridian/s, which are energy pathways of the body. When balance is achieved, an unhealthy condition is reversed and health is restored. While it has proven to be effective in curing all kinds of conditions, it is also a very powerful preventative modality because it is effective in detecting early signs and symptoms, which allows for ample time to treat the root of the problem before it turns into something more severe.
What should I expect during my first visit?
We typically spend 1 hour with every patient. On your first visit, please expect to spend up to 1.5 hours with us as we would like to know as much as we can about you. As we understand the excitement and nervousness that most experience during their first visit, we have arranged our place to be as tranquil as possible while still remaining functional. And, if possible, please wear comfortable clothing to maximize your relaxation during the treatment.
Does it hurt?
Most do not feel anything when the needles are inserted. We understand this concern and it might help to explain the way acupuncture needles are designed. Most think of injection needles when they hear the word, needle. Well, injection needles are hollow in the center to allow for liquid to be delivered or taken out. They are also meant to cut into the flesh. Well, acupuncture needles are solid and are designed to push muscle fibers aside and this is why most do not experience any discomfort.
How many treatments will it take to fix my problem?
This would be an easy question to answer if all bodies were the same. As we are all different in many ways, reactions to treatment vary accordingly. While some feel 80-100% better right after needling, some may need more. It really depends on what the condition is, how long it has been around, and this next one the most important, how much you want to heal and how much you believe you can heal!
Do you take insurance?
Yes, we do. We would be more than happy to assist you in contacting the insurance company for coverage.
How will acupuncture treatments interact with my medications?
Acupuncture is meant to balance one’s body, mind, and spirit. When all three are one, which means balanced, treatments become more effective because the body is better able to accommodate other modalities.
Does it have any side effects?
Yes, of course. Most feel very relaxed during and after treatments. Some lose weight, and this is simply because a balanced body works better. And, in this case, digestion of extra “stuff” in the body becomes much more efficient. And, most feel a deeper connection with their own bodies than they ever did before. Beautiful, isn’t it?
Aside from pain, what else can acupuncture treat?
It is natural to think of acupuncture as pain medicine, but it is much more than that. Acupuncture is complete medicine and, as such, is able to treat conditions such as: infertility, malposition of fetus (surgery can be avoided), asthma, diabetes, cancer, digestive problems, gynecological problems, and more.
